A dome structure is a perfect solution for the science center market especially planetariums in particular. CST designed/built a 76′ diameter 5/8th partial sphere for the Jackson Foundation in Dickson, Tennessee, right outside of Nashville for the new Renaissance Center. The geometry of the spaceframe framing is trapezoidal (similar to what was used at the Great Lakes Science Center) with spherical plywood panels, water & ice shield and a spherical diamond shaped paneling system on the exterior.
One of the objectives on the project was to develop a better paneling system for the exterior using our proprietary curved, spherical, plywood panels to create a true spherical exterior. The contract was broken down into two parts – design/engineering with the Architect and fabrication/installation with the Construction Manager.
